One Wedding and A Funeral

Last year, Totally Awesome Boyfriend and I went Pumpkin Picking. It was Rainy and A Long Drive, but it was A Great, Romantic, Fun Day. He pushed a Wheelbarrow through the Pumpkin Patch Mud. I showed him How To Pick Out The Best Pumpkins, having had Lots Of Experience growing up near the Long Island Pumpkin Farms. We asked someone to Take Our Photo. It was The Day when I realized I Wanted To Be With Him Forever.

On the ride home, I concocted This Insane Fantasy where we Go Back To The Pumpkin Patch a year later and Totally Awesome Boyfriend drops to his knees and Proposes. He has A Ring. I Cry with Delight and mouth the word, “Yes.” Then, I run into The Little Shop Area they have at The Pumpkin Patch and shout to all the people, “THE DAILY RANDI IS GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!” It’s A Crazy Dream, I know. We Girls, we all have one, don’t we? Sometimes, These Dreams involve George Clooney.

On Friday night, Totally Awesome Boyfriend and I were at Happy Hour, as I am wont to do on Every and Any Friday Night. (Seriously, Where’s Is At? Call Me! I’m There.) We were talking about The Next Day – we were going to go Pumpkin Picking, back where we had The Greatest Date Of Last Year. I had to get it Off My Chest, so I told him, “I hope I Have Fun. I fear I have Crazy Expectations.” And then I described to him My Silly Dream. Totally Awesome Boyfriend just Smirked. “You’re Right. You are Very Silly,” he told me, finishing off his Scotch. I could tell, he thought I was Totally Nagging Him Again About Getting Married.

We went Home and Totally Awesome Boyfriend suggested that we Sit On Our Patio. We have An Enormous Private Patio and I am always Complaining that We Don’t Sit Out On It Enough. Totally Awesome Boyfriend insisted I light Candles.

And then he pulled out A Ring and Asked Me To Marry Him.

I wish I oould tell you that I Cried With Delight. But, instead I was So Totally Effen Freaked Out That He Had Gone And Gotten A Ring And Was Asking Me To Marry Him that I Stepped Back, like I was A Vampire and He Was Holding Up A Cross and An Enormous Sack Of Garlic. Eventually, I crept up closer and Looked At The Ring. It was Beautiful.

“You didn’t answer My Question,” he reminded me.

“Oh, yeah. Yes!” I said, as I picked up The Ring. “Hey. What Finger does this go on?”

It turned, out, he had Planned to Propose to me in The Pumpkin Patch, just as I had Fantasized. I told No One about That Dream, aside from My Shrink once, just to Prove To Her How Crazy I Could Get. Totally Awesome Boyfriend just had The Same Exact Idea. After I told him About The Dream, he thought I Knew, and Freaked Out himself. So, he decided to Propose That Night Instead. Don’t Worry, I made him Reenact The Whole Proposal on Sunday Afternoon in The Pumpkin Patch anyway.

We told No One that we were Engaged over the weekend, aside from Easily Annoyed Sister. We didn’t tell His Sister. Or His Mom. Or My MOM. We didn’t want them to get All Crazy. Or Jinx anything. It was Our Little Secret for The Weekend.

Early This Morning, Totally Awesome Boyfriend’s Sister called to tell him that Their Mother had Died In Her Sleep the evening before. We Never Got To Tell Her We Were Engaged! We had Reverse Jinxing on our hands. She had Not Been Well, having suffered A Stroke a number of years ago. We should have Known Better. So, while Totally Awesome Boyfriend went about Making Funeral Arrangements, I started to Tell Everyone about Our Engagement. Naturally, I called My MOM first. You know, Just In Case.

And now, Dear Readers, I share This Wonderful, albeit Bittersweet, News With You:

THE DAILY RANDI IS GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TDR: There's a lot about getting married that's so incredibly wonderful, and there are times that are so completely bittersweet it's hard to explain. I hope the bittersweet part is out of the way. Congrats to you and TAB, and my condolences on your loss.

Congratulations! I have been waiting for this post for a long time! I'm only sorry it had to come with a side of bad news, as well. But that's an amazing story and clearly good karma that you both had the same idea. It gave me chills just reading. :)

Mazel Tov! Yes, amazing karma that you both had the same thought about the pumpkin patch.

TAB's mother knows now and that's what matters.

My best wishes to you both.

That is absolutely great news (about the wedding part) and very sad news (about your fiance's mom's part)..

Mazel tov (first and foremost).

Baruch Dayan Emet. I'm very sorry for your's and your fiance's loss. It's odd how this is in many ways similar to what happened to me last year.

My then boyfriend (now husband) was coming to visit from Canada and we had a trip planned for us to travel to see my mom. He never met her. Exactly one week before we were to go, she passed away, a year ago yesterday. Two months later we were engaged and my mom never got to see it for herself.

My point...you're not alone and I'm sure there are challenging times ahead but you two will make it.

I'm happy for you truly. If you need any advice on the death/Jewish stuff...there is a great book Avi got me called "Saying Kaddish". It's been quite helpful this year.

May MOTAB's (Mother of T.A.B.) memory be for a blessing.

Switching gears... (man, is it hard to switch from sadness to happiness at the drop of a hat!) ->

And to the both of you, you have my biggest mazal tov on your engagement! To me, your TAB is my TAF.

Oh, enjoy enjoy enjoy your engagement! Being married is also fun. Wedding planning, however, can be, um, challenging. You, I am certain, will have AMAZING stories to tell us about the process.

Just to let you know, when I wrote TAF before, I meant 'friend.' He's not my fiance. (In case you weren't sure.)

Wonderful story, save for the sad news of TAB's Mom, of course.

However he should'a stuck to the plan. I hope you made him get his knees dirty.
